Pilot project investigators, OCRID faculty, and other Oklahoma investigators may have limited animal research experience and limited biosafety level training in in vivo preclinical experimentation of respiratory and infectious diseases. In addition, these researchers will need in vivo validation of in vitro discoveries. As a result, consistent care, experimental procedures with pathogens in vivo, and animal husbandry are important for the success of the pilot projects, funding applications, and manuscript publication. Therefore, the objective of the Animal Models Core (AMC) is to ensure experimental consistency, compliance with animal welfare and pathogen safety regulations, and to provide training in animal model phenotyping and cutting-edge respiratory and infectious disease experiments.

  • This is a machine that is a multimodal in vivo imaging system combining both light and X-ray technologies, which enables researchers to non-invasively study molecular and anatomical characteristics in live rodents. It utilizes highly sensitive biofluorescence and bioluminescence to track disease progression or drug distribution, while simultaneously generating high-resolution radiographs for accurate anatomical correlation. This combination provides comprehensive functional and morphological data essential for advanced translational studies in feline health and disease.

  • A confocal microscope is an optical light microscope which uses lasers of varying wavelengths to excite fluorescent dyes which have been specifically added to samples, or samples which are inherently fluorescent. The confocal microscope is useful for determining the presence and location of specific structures, cellular organelles, and proteins on or within samples. Antibodies to proteins of interest can be labeled with fluorescent compounds and then used to identify the location and amount of these proteins present within samples. In addition, the confocal microscope eliminates any out of focus illumination, and therefore can be used to "optically section" a sample – capturing images at multiple planes of focus. The optical sections can then be used to produce a 3-D image of the sample, which can be useful for precisely determining the location of the material of interest or for confirming co-localization of two different proteins or organelles.
