Rudra Channappanavar, DVM, PhD is an Assistant Professor in Viral Immunology and Veterinary Pathology at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Oklahoma State University where he has an active research program that focuses on coronavirus-host interactions and evaluation of anti-viral/anti-inflammatory agents to reduce hCoV disease. He also has developed a research program aimed to understand the basis for severe coronavirus disease in the enderly. Dr. Channappanavar earned his DVM from Veterinary College, KVAFSU, India, and his MVSc from Indian Veterinary Research Institute. He received his PhD from Oakland University in viral immunology and post-doctoral training at the University of Iowa in Coronavirus Immunobiology and virology. He is currently an Assistant Professor for Oklahoma Center for Respiratory and Infectious Diseases (OCRID).
Research Interests:
1) Coronavirus-host interactions and mechanisms of protective and pathogenic immunity.
Emerging and re-emerging viruses are major threat to global public health. This is illustrated by the continuous appearance of several highly pathogenic viruses, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-CoV-2 (SARS-CoV), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-CoV (MERS-CoV)], SARS-CoV-1, and re-emerging (influenza virus) respiratory viruses Therefore, it is essential to understand the virology and immunobiology of highly pathogenic virus infections in order to identify specific factors contributing to the unusually high pathogenicity, and to develop effective prophylactic and therapeutic strategies to prevent and control future outbreaks. One of our goals is to examine the virus and host factors-mediating protective and pathogenic immune responses to the highly virulent respiratory virus (coronaviruses and influenza virus) infections. We will use immunology-, virology- and molecular biology-based in vitro and in vivo experiments. We will also use well-established transfection methods and viral vectors (adenovirus or lentivirus) to either knock down/out (siRNA and CRISPR/Cas9) or over-express gene targets in vitro and in vivo. In vivo studies include the use of WT, knockout and knock-in mice.
2) Improving immune response to human CoV infections and vaccinations in the elderly.
We are also developing a research program to investigate the host factors responsible for sub-optimal immune response to virus infections in the elderly, with an ultimate goal to develop therapeutics for viral lung infections and enhance the immune response to viral infections and vaccines. Aging is associated with an increased risk of acquiring infections due to dysregulated or impaired immune response. Since the elderly population is increasing due to increased life expectancy, understanding the basis of this increased susceptibility to infections is critical. Our recent results show that dysregulated interferon (IFN) and inflammatory immune cell responses are in-part responsible for the deleterious outcomes following viral lung infections in the aged hosts. Using mouse models of viral lung infections, we will examine the role of IFNs and monocytes-macrophages in host protection during aging. We also evaluate host response to a variety of vaccines in young and aged host with a goal to identify the basis for weak immune response in the aged hosts.
3) Identification and evaluation of anti-viral and anti-inflammatory agents to reduce hCoV disease severity.
Another focus of our laboratory is to identify potential antiviral and anti-inflammatory agents to prevent and treat severe disease caused by CoVs. The antiviral agents target different viral proteins that are critical for virus replication. Kathryn Duncan, DVM, PhD, DACVM (Parasitology) is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee where she obtained her doctorate in veterinary medicine at The University of Tennessee. She completed her residency in veterinary parasitology through the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology and obtained a PhD in biomedical sciences at Oklahoma State University. In 2022, she became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, board-certified in Parasitology. Her research interests include emerging concerns in veterinary parasitology and vector-borne diseases of public health importance.

Dr. Fouad S. Elmayet is currently a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He holds a DVM and a master’s degree in Veterinary Virology. Dr. Elmayet completed his Ph.D. in Virology at Benha University, Egypt, in collaboration with Oklahoma State University, USA, in 2019. His doctoral research focused on herpesvirology. Following his Ph.D., Dr. Elmayet was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Virology at Benha University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where he taught virology to undergraduate and graduate students. During this time, he also conducted research on picornaviruses, including duck hepatitis A viruses and FMDV, as well as astroviruses. Dr. Elmayet later moved to the United States to pursue postdoctoral research with Dr. Clinton Jones at Oklahoma State University, concentrating on alpha-herpesvirus infections, particularly HSV-1 and BoHV-1. Dr. Elmayet’s current research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms by which alpha herpesviruses establish, maintain, and reactivate from latency in neurons, with the ultimate goal of developing a vaccine to prevent or eliminate herpesvirus latency. Dr. Elmayet is also a full member of the American Society for Virology and serves on the editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals, including Frontiers in Microbiology and BMC Veterinary Research.

Dr. Kelly S. Harrison is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She earned her MS at Oklahoma State University in Immunology in 2014 designing protein subunit vaccines against Gram-negative pathogens Shigella and Salmonella. Kelly completed her Ph.D. in Molecular Biosciences from the University of Kansas in 2017, where she studied the pathogenesis of Chlamydia species. Following her doctoral training, she pursued postdoctoral research with Dr. Richard Eberle and Dr. Clinton Jones at OSU, focusing on α-herpesvirus infections, including HSV-1, BoHV-1, and Monkey B virus.
Dr. Harrison’s research explores sex-specific differences in STI pathogenesis, with a particular emphasis on the role hormones play during infectivity. Her work integrates multiple disciplines, investigating key cell signaling pathways in neurology, immunology, and cellular biology. With extensive expertise in microbiology, laboratory animal models, and drug/vaccine development, she is committed to advancing our understanding of host-pathogen interactions for development of innovative patient-centric therapeutic interventions.

Clinton Jones, PhD, is working as a Professor of veterinary pathobiology, Oklahoma State University. He completed his PhD from the University of Kansas in May 1984, then did a postdoc at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine (Palo Alto, CA) Laboratory of Viral Carcinogenesis, June, 1984-May, 1987. Jones has published more than 150 articles and is the author of many books. His research interest mainly focused on Latency of a-herpesvirinae subfamily members, Bovine Herpes Virus 1 (BHV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1). He has significant contributions to understanding the latency-reactivation cycle of BHV-1 and HSV-1, and the similarities these two distinct viruses have in common during the latency-reactivation cycle. A few of the recent discoveries of Jones include discovering that latent gene products inhibit apoptosis and the identification of cellular transcription factors in sensory neurons of trigeminal ganglia induced by the synthetic corticosteroid dexamethasone during BHV-1 and HSV-1 reactivation from latency.

Mayara F. Maggioli, DVM, MS, Ph.D, earned her DVM and MS degrees from Federal University of Goias (Brazil) and her Ph.D. from Iowa State University. Dr. Maggioli research focuses on host responses to infections, disease biomarkers and correlates of protection to bacterial and viral infections of livestock with translational relevance, aiming to advance disease prevention and control strategies and to promote health.

Valerie McElliott, DVM, Ph.D, DACVP, earned a B.S. degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University, a DVM degree with honors from Tuskegee University, and a Ph.D. degree, with emphasis on classical and atypical scrapie, from University of Georgia at Athens.
McElliott completed a one-year internship in veterinary anatomic pathology at Tuskegee University, before heading to University of California at Davis for residency training, also in veterinary anatomic pathology. She has been a member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists since 2013. Currently, McElliott is an assistant professor, and residency training coordinator for the veterinary pathobiology program.
McElliott is currently a member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, American Veterinary Medical Association, C.L. Davis and Samuel Wesley Thompson DVM Foundation, the National Society of Phi Zeta, and the Georgia and Oklahoma State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.

Jerry Ritchey, DVM, PhD, DACVP, is from Tulsa, Oklahoma and completed a B.S. in Microbiology (1987) and DVM (1991) from Oklahoma State University. Following veterinary school, he entered a residency in anatomic pathology at North Carolina State University and completed a PhD in Immunology (1997) investigating the affects of FIV immunosuppression on the pulmonary immune compartment.
Ritchey joined the faculty at Oklahoma State in 1997 and currently serves as Department Head for Veterinary Pathobiology. Anatomic PathologyJerry Ritchey, DVM, PhD, DACVP, is from Tulsa, Oklahoma and completed a B.S. in Microbiology (1987) and DVM (1991) from Oklahoma State University. Following veterinary school, he entered a residency in anatomic pathology at North Carolina State University and completed a PhD in Immunology (1997) investigating the affects of FIV immunosuppression on the pulmonary immune compartment.

After several years in small animal private practice she accepted a position at OSU for a three year residency in Veterinary Clinical Pathology and achieved board certification in 2005. She became a faculty member in 2006.
She has co-authored two textbooks and numerous book chapters and journal articles.

Jennifer Rudd is a fully licensed veterinarian, educator and researcher with specialization in infectious diseases. After graduating with her doctorate in veterinary medicine from Oklahoma State in 2011, Dr. Rudd practiced small animal medicine and surgery (general practitioner) for several years before returning to her alma mater to pursue her doctorate in comparative biomedical sciences, with an emphasis on the innate immune response to pandemic influenzas and bacterial coinfections in people. Dr. Rudd is an assistant professor at OSU College of Veterinary Medicine and the interim Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs. She enjoys continuing to pursue her passions of teaching future veterinarians, researching infectious disease, and progressing innovative and effective education for future Oklahoma State veterinarians.

Dr. Joy Scaria is the Walter R. Sitlington Endowed Chair in Infectious Diseases and an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology at Oklahoma State University. He directs OSU’s Germ-Free and Gnotobiotic Core Facility, a university-level resource established to enable mechanistic microbiome research using gnotobiotic and humanized animal models. Prior to joining OSU, he served as a tenured faculty member at South Dakota State University, where he led major initiatives at the intersection of research, diagnostics, and workforce training. His professional service includes elected leadership roles in the American Society for Microbiology, including service on the ASM Council of Microbial Sciences (COMS), which advises ASM’s Board on emerging scientific trends and growth opportunities across the microbial sciences. He is also an Honorary Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology (ACVM), recognizing outstanding contributions to veterinary microbiology.
Research Focus
Research in the Scaria laboratory focuses on microbiome-guided strategies to improve human and animal health. The program emphasizes mechanistic studies and translation by integrating anaerobic culturomics, microbial genomics and metagenomics, defined microbial consortia, and gnotobiotic and humanized animal models with targeted metabolomics and immune phenotyping. These approaches enable identification of causal microbes, microbial pathways, and metabolites that shape host physiology and infection outcomes.
A major area of work is the development of defined bacterial consortia and engineered probiotics that enhance colonization resistance against enteric pathogens and support immune homeostasis. The laboratory designs and tests synthetic communities with controlled composition to dissect microbial interactions, resource competition, and metabolite cross-feeding that influence pathogen exclusion and community stability. In parallel, the group investigates microbiome-derived metabolites and microbial biotransformation products that modulate host defenses and antibiotic responses, with the goal of advancing deployable interventions for animal agriculture, including probiotic formulations, fermentation-derived bioactives, and microbiome-informed management strategies that reduce reliance on antibiotics.
A second area of focus treats antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a systems problem in livestock-associated landscapes. This work connects host-associated microbiomes, waste streams, environmental dissemination, and downstream exposure pathways, leveraging interdisciplinary partnerships and data-driven modeling. The objective is to generate actionable evidence for AMR mitigation, from microbial targets and intervention points to decision tools that inform producer practices and public health strategies.
