While Cathy Allen spent her childhood in the corn and soybean-laden fields of central Illinois, Oklahoma has become her true home away from home. First introduced to the state through her husband Kevin, a fellow Illinoisan turned cowboy, she has become connected to Oklahoma State University after career stops at the University of Illinois and the University of Missouri.
At the age of 8, Cathy said the 4-H pledge at her first Raymond Sparklers 4-H club meeting and has never stopped. Her favorite 4-H project was You Learn to Bake. She has since created a recipe of combining her love of 4-H and healthy living that has continued through her 32-year career working as a 4-H Youth Development Professional. While Cathy Allen spent her childhood in the corn and soybean-laden fields of central Illinois, Oklahoma has become her true home away from home. Bir's research focuses on farmer and rancher decision making related to production possibilities and finances. By eliciting consumer preferences for agricultural products, and analyzing the potential for farmers to incorporate these preferences profitably, Bir is working to bridge the gap between consumer preferences and farmer possibilities. I have served as an Assistant Professor and Small Grains Extension Specialist at Oklahoma State University since August 2019. I believe that close interaction with producers is vital to understand their production strategies and to establish realistic research goals. My program focuses on developing science-based information to improve the agronomic and economic viability of small grains production in Oklahoma and in the Southern Great Plains.
I coordinate the Small Grains Variety Performance trials in Oklahoma. I also conduct an applied Research and Extension program, which uses information on crop physiology and plant nutrient requirements during the growing season to improve wheat variety characterization and crop management strategies, maximizing yield and while maintaining environmental stewardship.

My research interests include identifying mechanisms that determine where and what domesticated ungulates graze. I am specifically interested in individual behavioral differences that are consistent in multiple contexts and limit an animals' ability to adapt in varying environments. The effects of differences in personality on grazing distribution, dam reproductive efficiency, and offspring performance are also areas where I focus because of their ecological and economic importance. I also research methods to manipulating which plant species are grazed (targeted grazing) through specific supplements, grazing systems, species selection (cattle, goat, sheep), and management techniques. My goal is to help livestock producers select animals whose behaviors fit best with management objectives. My research interests include identifying mechanisms that determine where and what domesticated ungulates graze. I am an Associate Professor of Biosystems Engineering and Extension Waste Management Specialist.
The mission of extension is to bring the land grant university to the people. True, the extension service delivers unbiased, scientifically-sound research information outside of the university classroom, but extension also serves as a conduit bringing real-life, researchable questions back to the laboratory. As an engineer, my role is to seek out problems at the intersection of agricultural production and environmental preservation and solve them through educational programs and applied research.
I have worked for Oklahoma State University and the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service since 1995. I mostly work in manure handling and treatment, but deal with all types of organic materials. My three program areas are material properties and handling, systems management (including safety and regulation), and treatment.
Before coming to Oklahoma, I was the Soil and Water Extension Specialist for the Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service. Many years ago, I also worked as an engineer at the pollution control agency for the State of Arkansas. I earned all my degrees in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Arkansas, Iowa State University, and Penn State University. I also graduated from the world's most famous high school – Little Rock Central.
Research Interests:
I conduct applied research in organic waste treatment and nutrient recycling.
For nearly four decades I have worked on anaerobic digestion of liquids and slurries. The focus on my most recent efforts has been development of the Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor (ASBR) for treatment of low-solids liquids. An ASBR digester is able to treat organic liquids with a very small hydraulic detention time, which greatly reduces reactor size. I also contributed to the understanding and standardization of facultative lagoons for agricultural waste treatment.
I also work with composting and vermicomposting to treat solid waste materials. I have developed process parameters to treat food wastes, poultry litter, and poultry mortality compost using earth worms. Early in my career at Oklahoma State I developed an easy to operate composting system for horse owners.I am an Associate Professor of Biosystems Engineering and Extension Waste Management Specialist.
