    I am currenty the Grant Program Manager in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering and for the South Central Sun Grant Program and the Biobased Products and Energy Center at OSU. I am also teaching at the Environmental Science Undergraduate Program. I am a holder of a B.S. degree in Agriculture from the Visayas State College of Agirculture (now Visayas state University in Leyte, Philippines), M.S. degree in Botany from the University of the Philippines, and a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the North Carolina State University.

    Dr. Abit earned a B.S. degree in Agriculture from the Visayas State University (VSU). He joined the Department of Agronomy and Soil Science at VSU in 2001 as member of its teaching faculty. Sergio then studied Soil Science at the North Carolina State University earning an M.S. in 2005 and Ph.D. in 2009. Dr. Abit also worked as research soil scientist for the USDA-ARS in Bowling Green, KY before joining the faculty in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at the Oklahoma State University in 2012. Dr. Abit focuses primarily in Soil Science teaching and is the Undergraduate Student Coordinator of the department. He is a member of the Environmental Science Program Steering Committee. He also serves as the State Specialist for Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems wherein he leads efforts to provide continuing education opportunities for septic system professionals in Oklahoma.

    Research Interests:

    1. Sub-surface fates of dissolved pollutants (excess nitrogen and phosphorus)
    2. Impacts of soil amendments and hydrologic conditions on subsurface fates of pathogenic bacteria.

    Dr. Daniel Adamson was raised on a cow-calf ranch in southern Wyoming where he developed his love for agriculture and desire to help producers overcome challenges with practical, tested resources. Dr. Adamson completed his education at the University of Wyoming, where he attained a BS in Agroecology, MS in Agronomy, and PhD in Soil Science. Between his master's and PhD degrees, Dr. Adamson also worked as a Certified Crop Advisor for a regional agricultural co-op in northern Colorado. Dr. Adamson joined the department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Oklahoma State University in fall 2024 as the Extension Specialist for Soil and Water Management and Conservation. His research and extension interests are centered around management impacts on soil health and soil functionality on the farm, ranch, and around the home.

    Dr. Alderman seeks to leverage highly collaborative, transdisciplinary research to support sustainable and resilient farming systems in Oklahoma, the southern Great Plains and around the world. His approach to research fits within what the National Science Foundation has recently termed "convergence research." Specifically, his program is positioned at the interface between computational modeling, Bayesian analysis, high performance computing, plant breeding/genomics, and crop ecophysiology in the context of agriculture. In particular, he investigates the interactions between weather/climate, soil, crop genetics, and management on the current and future sustainability and resilience of agricultural systems.

    Dr. Sara Alian is an Teaching Assistant Professor at the department of Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering at Oklahoma State University. She has over 14 years of experience in geospatial science applications in natural resource management and geospatial science education. Her expertise is in the areas of geospatial sciences, GIS technology, and remote sensing to inform resource management decisions, including land, water, and forest management. She developed a new course entitled "GIS for Water Resources" (BAE 4323/BAE 5323) in response to increasing demand for geospatial analysis skills in the job market and research projects. Th course cover various aspects of geographic information system (GIS) applications in water resources. 

    Dr. Alian has worked on interdisciplinary projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Great Lakes Protection Fund, and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to generate new information, geospatial data, and insights for sustainable biofuel feedstock management and production of biofuel feedstocks, to evaluate ecological water stress in the Great Lakes Region, and New Mexico-Texas-Mexico border region. She is currently collaborating on a USGS funded project examining environmental flows in the water scarce region.

    While Cathy Allen spent her childhood in the corn and soybean-laden fields of central Illinois, Oklahoma has become her true home away from home. First introduced to the state through her husband Kevin, a fellow Illinoisan turned cowboy, she has become connected to Oklahoma State University after career stops at the University of Illinois and the University of Missouri.

    At the age of 8, Cathy said the 4-H pledge at her first Raymond Sparklers 4-H club meeting and has never stopped. Her favorite 4-H project was You Learn to Bake. She has since created a recipe of combining her love of 4-H and healthy living that has continued through her 32-year career working as a 4-H Youth Development Professional.

    I’m an Animal Scientist with an MSc in Genetics and Animal Breeding and a Ph.D. in Animal Sciences (Quantitative Genetics). I’m interested in better understanding the genetic architecture of economically important traits and applying and developing statistical methods for prediction in the multi-omics era.

    I am a Small Grains Pathologist and have served as an Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State University since January 2022. My research focuses on the genetics of disease resistance in wheat. I evaluate OSU winter wheat breeding lines to multiple fungal and viral diseases to help the development of disease resistant varieties. My extension work is based on scouting and diagnosis of wheat diseases. I also provide disease management recommendations that benefit wheat producers, consumers, and the environment.

    Dr. Brian Arnall is a precision nutrient management extension specialist for Oklahoma State University. Dr. Arnall's extension, teaching, and research efforts are focused on precision technologies and nutrient management in all of Oklahoma's cropping systems with an emphasis in site specific techniques. He works closely with extension educators and industry personnel to improve nutrient management practices that will lead to increased profitability of producers. Dr. Arnall has been involved in sensor based technologies, remote sensing and variable rate application for more than ten years. Brian has more than 50 refereed journal pubs, more than 50 successful grants with total funds exceeding $2.5 million for his project. He has given 600+ talks in 7 countries. His program has produced 35 apps across iOS and Andriod platforms. His work focuses on providing information and tools to producers that will lead to improved nutrient management practices and increased profitability of Oklahoma production agriculture. Dr. Arnall received his doctorate in soil science from Oklahoma State University in 2008. He has served as an extension specialist since the completion of his studies. He teaches courses on Soil Nutrient Management and Precision Ag at Oklahoma State.

    Dr. Hasan Atiyeh is a Professor in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering at Oklahoma State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada, and has broad academic and industrial experience in bioprocess engineering, fermentation, carbon capture, reactor design, hydrogen production, and process scale-up. Dr. Atiyeh has published over 70 journal articles, three book chapters, and delivered 200+ presentations. He holds five U.S. patents and 13 additional applications. His research has received over $5.7 million in funding from agencies including NSF, USDA-NIFA, EPA, Sun Grant, OCAST, NSERC, KACST, and SABIC. He is a senior member of AIChE, and a member of ASABE and ASEE, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario, Canada.


    Research Interests: Dr. Atiyeh’s research focuses on the development of innovative conversion technologies for the production of fuels and chemicals, supporting key sectors such as energy, biotechnology, food, chemical, and environmental industries. His work emphasizes:

    • Bioprocess development for converting gases, sugars, and waste materials into biofuels and biochemicals
    • Utilization of novel microorganisms and biocatalysts
    • Process modeling, simulation, reactor design, and scale-up
    • Carbon capture and utilization
    • Water treatment, reuse, and minimizing water use in processing

     

    His research integrates lab experimentation with process modeling to pioneer sustainable solutions. His team is a leader in the development of hybrid gasification–syngas fermentation technologies and other cutting-edge bioconversion processes at OSU, with the goal of advancing the biorefinery industry as a complement to the petroleum-based economy.

    Carrie Baker is an assistant professor of agricultural communications at Oklahoma State University in the Department of Agricultural Education, Communications, and Leadership. Baker completed her Ph.D. at the University of Florida in agricultural education and communication in May 2025. Baker earned her B.A. from Greenville University in communications and her M.S. from Texas A&M University in agricultural communications. In addition to a variety of industry roles, Baker previously served as an assistant lecturer of agricultural communications and journalism at Texas A&M University and as a marketing strategy coordinator for the Texas A&M AgriLife, where she led a team of specialists using strategic communication, marketing analytics and impactful storytelling to help restore connections among people, agriculture, food, science and the economy.

     

    Baker’s research engages local community leaders and industry stakeholders to examine and communicate about critical health and safety issues in the agricultural and food sector, strengthen community health and rural development in underserved areas, and advance strategic agricultural and health communication to increase trust and promote behavior change. While her work focuses on health and well-being broadly in the agrifood sector, she has specific expertise in farm stress and producer mental health, healthcare access, and agricultural workforce sustainability.

    Carrie Baker is an assistant professor of agricultural communications at Oklahoma State University in the Department of Agricultural Education, Communications, and Leadership.     Steve Beck is State Program Leader for 4-H and Assistant Director of OSU Extension. Dr. Beck returned to OSU following nearly five years as the 4-H Youth Development department head at New Mexico State University. Before he went out of state, he spent 10 years as a County Educator in Harper and Kingfisher counties, and another seven years as a State Specialist in Oklahoma 4-H administration.

    Dr. Danielle (Dani) Bellmer is a Professor in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering and the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center. Her appointment includes both teaching and research involving food process engineering and the development of value-added products.

    Research Interests:

    Dr. Bellmer's research involves development of value-added food and agricultural products and processes. Some project examples include encapsulation of microbial sources of protein for enhancement of flavor and delivery, conversion of soft drink waste to biofuels, development of value-added products from watermelon waste, high protein peanut snacks, and development of edible films. Her work also involves conversion of sweet sorghum to biofuels and bioproducts.

    Biography

     

    Dr. JoHannah H. Biang is an Assistant Professor of Ornamental Horticulture and Sustainable Landscapes in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Oklahoma State University. Her interdisciplinary research bridges applied horticultural science, sustainable landscape management, and the social dimensions of horticulture, with an emphasis on resilience, education, and community engagement.

     

    Dr. Biang’s current research program focuses on evaluating ornamental and edible specialty crops for performance under environmental stress, including drought, wind, and temperature extremes, with particular attention to low-input and multifunctional species suitable for Oklahoma landscapes. Ongoing projects include assessing the ornamental, agronomic, and nutritional potential of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), an herbal specialty crop, as well as collaborative evaluations of woody and perennial ornamentals. Additionally her research program seeks to support and strengthen the work of specialty cut flower producers in Oklahoma with cultivar evaluation, production recommendations, season extension through high tunnel usage, and growing the network through workshops and conferencing. Her work supports growers, landscape professionals, and educators seeking sustainable and adaptable plant selections.

     

    She earned her Ph.D. in Crop and Soil Sciences from the University of Georgia, where her dissertation examined student experiences at a university community farm using qualitative research methods, including interviews, surveys, focus groups, and participant observation. This work contributes to a broader understanding of how experiential and service-learning environments influence student learning, self-efficacy, and long-term engagement in agriculture and food systems.

     

    Before joining Oklahoma State University, Dr. Biang managed the gardens and greenhouse of a historic estate dating to 1841 with a team of skilled horticulturalists by maintaining, re-designing, and restoring the historic formal gardens at Hills and Dales Estate. Here she reignited her love of ornamentals, public gardening, and landscape horticulture. Prior to this position, Dr. Biang managed the UGArden, a 9-acre student-run organic teaching farm at the University of Georgia, and has held leadership roles in public gardens, historic landscapes, and one particular teaching farm. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes experiential learning, mentorship, and the integration of social, ecological, and technical perspectives within horticulture education.

    Dr. Patricia Canaan received her B.S. degree in Medical Technology in 1986 at Oklahoma State University. She obtained her M.S. degree in 1990 in Microbiology and her Ph.D. degree in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics in 1997 at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater OK. Dr. Canaan then joined the department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Oklahoma State University in the research lab led by Dr. Rolf Prade investigated the genetics of plant cell wall breakdown by filamentous fungi including Aspergillus nidulans as a model system. In 2001, Dr. Canaan joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Oklahoma State University, where she served as Assistant Director of the OSU Microarray Core Facility. In 2004, Dr. Canaan joined the faculty at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Oklahoma State University, where she plays an important role in undergraduate teaching and academic advising. Dr. Canaan has developed a research program focused on antibiotic resistance in Elizabethkingia.

    Research Interests:

    The Canaan lab uses advanced technologies and genomics approaches including metagenomic and proteomic approaches, genome sequence analysis, transcriptomics, DNA microarray analysis and various bioinformatics tools to study a variety of biological problems. Studies have include intracellular parasitic modulation of gene expression in human host cells by Anaplasma phagocytophilum (de la Fuente 2008 and Galindo 2008) or Coxiella burnetii (Mahapatra 2010), specific induction and relief from carbon catabolite repression as two systems involved in expression of genes for metabolism of complex polysaccharides; and gene expression patterns during carbon deprivation and pectin metabolism by the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans (Ray 2011 and Saykhedkar 2011) or Phanerochaete chrysosporium (Ray 2011). Bioinformatics tools such as PipeOnLine and GenePix Auto-Processor have been developed to assist in automated processing of large-scale biological data. PipeOnline is a web-based integration of tools designed to process DNA sequence data and generate online pubic and private databases (Ayoubi 2001). GenePix Auto-Processor (GPAP) is a web-based interface for second level preprocessing and statistical analysis of primary expression data obtained from microarray image processing (Weng 2005). More recently, Dr. Canaan's lab is interested in metagenomic and proteomic approaches to identify candidate enzymes to identify novel genes and enzymes in bacteria useful for lignocellulose bioconversion (Dalvi 2011 and Prabhakaran 2011). Tools, algorithms and robust computational resources for rapid pre-processing and annotation of metagomic-scale sequence data are vital to these studies.
