I teach courses on African history, Black studies, and global and international histories from the fifteenth century to the present. Some of the classes taught include Black Resistance, Modern World History since 1500, Modern African History, and Global Perspectives on Gender, Violence, and Genocide.

    Introduction to the study of history through the lens of current events and contemporary issues. Particular areas of focus will vary, based on instructor’s expertise, to include topics like race, gender religion, food, sports, environment, politics, immigration, mass incarceration, and/or globalization, among others.     World History 1500 to Present (H)

    This course surveys world history from 1500 to the present day. The course will track the formation of the “modern” world through a study of changes in political situations, culture, and society. The course will examine topics such as changes in science and technology, culture and religion, the expansion and decline of empires, the growth of nationalism, and the continuing rise of globalization. The class will emphasize the role of changing definitions and roles of race, social class, and gender in shaping historical events. Previously offered as HIST 2223.

    The History of Modern Africa (HI)

    The course will cover the history of Modern Africa from 1750 to the present. The class will begin with a general background and history of ancient and early modern Africa, and move forward with examinations of colonial and contemporary African culture, society, and politics. The course will have a particular focus on African perspectives on the West, and the effects of the slave trade, imperialism, and globalization on modern day Africa. Students will analyze many different types of sources including films, artwork, graphic novels, novels, and poetry.
