TEACHING SUMMARY

As a Social Studies teacher and teacher education, Dr. Nowell prioritizes preparing critical thinkers and engaged citizens. In her role as a university teacher preparation faculty, she mentors pre-service and in-service teachers. Social Studies has come to the forefront of national discussions on public schools and students need well-rounded histories in order to empower them with the tools they will need to create the futures they want to see. Human history is complex and our classrooms should be places where students discuss, deliberate, and engage in difficult dialogues on historical and current issues. We need to embrace teaching strategies that are culturally relevant, anti-racist, and inquiry-based, and offer students the tools they will need to be informed and engaged citizens in our ever-changing world.
