BIO & RESEARCH INTERESTs

Dr. Sarah Sarver joins the faculty at Oklahoma State University as Assistant Professor of Music Theory. Previous appointments include Professor of Music Theory at Oklahoma City University, where she taught for thirteen years, and Florida State University. She has also worked with students as an invited guest scholar at Bowling Green State University and the University of Texas at Arlington.

Dr. Sarver's research focuses on late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century tonality. Selected scholarly presentations explore the ways in which chromatic excursions interact with diatonic structural processes in works by Richard Strauss. Additionally, Dr. Sarver is interested in the relationship between text and music in Lieder. She has presented her research at regional and international conferences, including the Music Theory Southeast, Texas Society for Music Theory, Oklahoma Music Theory Roundtable, and Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory regional meetings, as well as the Society for Music Theory annual meeting.

In recent years, she has worked with W.W. Norton & Co. as a Digital Content Reviewer and Accuracy Expert, and in 2015 she was appointed as a Digital Media Author for The Musician's Guide to Theory and Analysis and The Musician's Guide to Fundamentals. She has authored, updated, and published online content for these resources.

Dr. Sarver earned a Ph.D. in Music Theory from Florida State University, where she worked with dissertation co-advisors Michael Buchler and Joseph Kraus and studied music theory pedagogy with scholars Jane Piper Clendinning and Nancy Rogers. Prior to studying at Florida State University, Dr. Sarver received an M.M. in Music Theory from Southern Methodist University. She also holds a B.M. in Vocal Performance and a minor in French studies from Centenary College of Louisiana.
