The traditional terminology and concepts of English grammar leading or evolving into the several current systems of description. May not be used for degree credit with ENGL 5130.

Introduction to the study of how languages work and how they're used. Looks at speech sounds, how words are formed, the structure of phrases and sentences, the use of language in interaction. Considers English and other languages of the world. Same course as ENGL 4063. May not be used for degree credit with ENGL 5143.

Study of a topic in linguistics, chosen at the instructor's discretion. May not be used for degree credit with ENGL 5140 or ENGL 6410.Offered for fixed credit, 3 credit hours, maximum of 6 credit hours.
