ENPP 2143: Global Agricultural Biosecurity and Forensics
3 credit hours, no prerequisites. No electronics are allowed in class, as they interfere with class dynamics and student participation. Class handouts and exam study guides will be provided. 
We are all interconnected through biosecurity; all students are welcome!

Would you like to know about Biosecurity, biosafety, bioterrorism, biowarfare, biocrimes, microbial forensics, emerging organisms, invasive species, food safety, food biosecurity, quarantine, responses, surveillance, detection, diagnostics, and how all are related with elements of a biosecurity system and how biosecurity and microbial forensics integrate to science, to Ag specialties, animal and human health, economics, justice, and defense? This attractive and engaging professional option complements any major and prepares students for a career in biosecurity and microbial forensics, related research, science, or roles in biosecurity agencies. This course meets the needs of a new group of students seeking a component of biosecurity and microbial forensics in their major and career. ENTO/PLP 2143 introduces concepts and topics related to biosecurity, forensics, research, and consultancy, and offers a global biosecurity vision that interconnects the roles of different careers in biosecurity. Students learn from classwork, readings, reporting, and studying cases of international significance, including pathogenic microorganisms, insects, and weeds, as well as guest experts, and a final comprehensive simulation exercise. This course enhances the Ag and Forensics science programs and offers a new educational perspective not covered by current Ag and Forensics science curricula.

Interacting elements of a biosecurity system showing natural and globalized anthropogenic pathways through which exotics are introduced into a biological system, region, or country. This diagram also indicates scientific output moving toward policy and biosafety systems, from scientific disciplines, to encompass science policy and other instruments and activities that enable biosecurity to react, remediate, and manage risks through deliverables to different sectors of society.

ENPP 5014: Plant Virology
ENPP 5014 is offered only in spring semesters
This graduate course examines plant viruses as the causal agents of plant diseases. It introduces students to the updated taxonomy; biological, chemical, and physiological properties; transmission; host-virus and vector-virus relationships; replication; molecular virology; detection methods; diagnosis; ecology and epidemiology; and related agricultural biosecurity. The laboratory component provides a solid foundation in oligonucleotide primer design using freely accessible internet software for advanced detection methods based on PCR, RT-PCR, rapid nucleic acid isothermal methods (LAMP, RPA, HDA), serology, and EDNA (Electronic-probe Diagnostic Nucleic-acid Analysis). Students are introduced to invited international and national experts and to contemporary teamwork, culminating in a semester-long assignment that is assembled into a scientific article or a grant proposal. The course may not be used for degree credit with MICR 5123. Prerequisite(s): PLP 3343, MICR 2125, or PLNT 2013, or discuss with the instructor for permission.

Teaching Philosophy
I follow the Coach-Athlete model, which is more appealing (to me) than the Teacher-Student model. There is nothing wrong with the Teacher-Student model, but I believe the Coach-Athlete fits my purposes and goals better. The Teacher: Student is an excellent classic. The teacher teaches, and the students listen and study. The students play their roles interacting around a given subject. The communication tends to be one-way, although it is not always the case. The 'status quo' includes students having to earn merit to pass. Although a matter of controversy, some think the more demanding the course, the better the learning, and opinions about the learning outcome are frequently divided. The Coach-Athlete model has an innovative perspective; coaches and athletes interact around the subject with a common goal: winning! The victory, getting an 'A,' is equally shared. Communication is commonly bidirectional. The hard work becomes a standard (like an Olympic qualifying threshold to beat), and the coach (the Professor) will do the best in his capacity to mentor and 'inspire' the team (the whole class) to win (knowledge = 'A'). Ultimately, the athlete gets the medal and the coach's recognition. Got the message? Don't think twice. Come on board to win and learn!
