TEACHING SUMMARY

  • Petroleum Geology for Engineers. (Fall 2009 to Present) Required core course for the Minor in Petroleum Engineering. Responsible for course design, lectures, labs and TA supersision.
  • Advanced Well Log Analysis (Geology Grads) & Applied Well Log Analysis for Engineers (2013 - Present) Responsible for course design, lectures and weekly homework and TA supervision. Basic course for geologists and engineers in vertical hole well log interpretation that ermphasizes petrophysical concepts and prepares students for employment in the petroleum industry. Graduate students have additional problems that integrate log interpretation with structure and permeability complexity.
  • Introduction to Well Log Analysis (Spring 2015 - Present) Elective course to introduce petrophysical concepts and well log interpretation to upper division undergraduate Geology students. Course design is slower paced, gives added log examples, and petrophysical connection to cores. 
  • Geology of the National Parks (Spring 2012 - Present) Responsible for course design, lectures and TA supervision. Revised for online format (Fall 2016 - present) as well as In-person course. Introduction to the principles of geoscience with emphasis on plate tectonics concepts using 28 National Parks as teaching examples. 
  • Geology/Geography - Climate Change and Humanity (Spring 2024). Responsible for elective course for both geology and geography to introduce information and issues about application of scientific techniques to understand the complex relationships among climate, energy and environment and relate them to social and political implications. Students practiced scientific and communication skills through research papers and discussions.
  • The Power of Water: Sculpting the Earth (Spring 2022 - Present) Responsible for creation of Honors Add-on Discussion course for non-science students. Uses You-Tube videos as source information for weekly discussions. Four topics: River systems and drought; Caves, cynotes and cave paintings; Geysers and geothermal power; Glaciers and Polar ice melting; and world sea level change. Emphasis on UN Sustainability Goals.
  • Yellowstone:Anatomy of a Super Volcano (Spring 2020) Responsible for design of 8-week course for non-science majors to introduct students to physical proccesses related to causes for volcanic eruptions, causes for geysers, and human impact on fragile ecosystems. Taught once during pandemic.
  • Structural Geology (Spring 2010 & Spring 2011) Responsible for core geology course lectures, lab design and teaching assistants.

    Advanced Well Log Analysis
    12 Jan 2026 - 1 May 2026
    This course is for geology graduate students interested in the petroleum and environmental industries, geothermal energy and evaluating the subsurface environment using wireline logs. This course will focus on the geologic interpretation of a variety of well logs, as well as quantitative methods to determine porosity and permeability in aquifers and reservoirs, how reservoir fluids influence well log properties, calculating water saturation, and an introduction to unconventional reservoirs. Graduate students are given advanced homework exercises including interpretation of structure, selection of best logging technique, mineral identification, and fractured rock identification. Some exercises involve concurrent interpretation of well logs and core samples. No credit for students with credit in GEOL 4313 or GEOL 4323.Prerequisite(s): GEOL 3034 or consent of instructor.

This course covers geologic interpretation of reservoir characteristics based on a variety of well logs; quantitative determination of porosity and permeability, reservoir fluids and how they influence well log properties, calculation of water saturation, introduction to unconventional reservoirs, drilling and logging in lateral holes. May not be used for degree credit with GEOL 4313 or GEOL 5353.Prerequisite(s): GEOL 3413 with a grade of 'C' or higher.

Weekly labs provide hands-on exercises of techniques used for reservoir evaluation. A term project allows graduate students to synthesize concepts from lectures and techniques learned in lab, to evaluate the economic potential of an oil field and prepare a professional presentation. May not be used for degree credit with GEOL 3413.
