As an instructor deeply rooted in the theatre world, I am committed to fostering a dynamic learning environment where the relationship between mentor and apprentice remains at the heart of the educational experience. Drawing upon my background in theatre with a focus on design and production, I see education as a reciprocal process where educators guide and mentor emerging artists while continually refining their craft through teaching.

The foundation of my teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that true mastery of an art form requires hands-on experience. Embracing the wisdom passed down to me by my mentors, I hold that "you learn by doing." Just as a painter grasps the art of painting through the stroke of a brush or an actor embodies their craft on the stage, students must actively engage in theatre practice to genuinely comprehend its nuances. While academic study and textbooks are indispensable for acquiring knowledge, the direct experience of the art, coupled with rigorous research, will foster a deep and lasting understanding.

I also believe a holistic approach to theatre education is paramount in shaping well-rounded and versatile artists. Students must embrace the roles of actors, directors, designers, and managers and delve into the intricacies of specific technical skills, such as painting, sculpting, drafting, architecture, stitching, and stage technology. By cultivating a comprehensive understanding of the various facets of theatre, students are better equipped to appreciate the art form in its entirety.

In my instructional approach, I emphasize the fundamental building blocks of design and production, the intricate production processes, critical thinking, and storytelling. Mastering these foundational concepts gives students the essential knowledge to thrive as designers, technicians, and team members. Additionally, I advocate for simplicity and efficiency in design and production, echoing the principles of the K.I.S.S. method (Keep It Simple and Sane) and Less Is More. Every element incorporated into a production should directly contribute to the narrative, allowing for focused attention to details and the overarching storytelling process.

Additionally, I instill in my students the significance of collaboration within the performing arts. A successful production emerges from the seamless cooperation of the Director, Production Team, and Performers as they collectively analyze and solve the challenges presented by the script. This collaborative spirit reinforces the understanding that no single entity holds more importance than the collective whole.

As an instructor, I recognize the necessity of leading by example. My commitment to these philosophies and principles is evident in my actions and everyday conduct. By embodying the values I champion, I aim to inspire and guide the next generation of theatre artists, nurturing their growth and instilling a passion for lifelong learning and artistic exploration.
