TEACHING SUMMARY

My position is teaching the undergraduate laboratory. This laboratory is designed to give the student the necessary skills to pursue a degree in any of the medical professions, become a laboratory technician or graduate student. My research is on the protein, INI1, a member of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex. Several components of the SWI/SNF complexes function as tumor suppressors. When INI1 is deleted or mutated malignant tumors occur. I have cloned the INI1 protein and have expressed it in bacterial culture. My goal is to isolate and purify INI1 and to obtain the crystalline structure. I have made proteins from smaller sections of the INI1 protein in an effort to determine what part of the INI1 protein binds to DNA. I have started to clone BRG1 (a transcription activator) which is also in SWI/SNF complex.
