BIO & RESEARCH INTERESTs

Dr. Schweig works in combinatorics, which is a branch of mathematics that deals with counting and studying finite structures. For example, a combinatorist might ask how many different routes there are between two cities, or how many such routes satisfy particular constraints (shorter distances, fewer road changes, etc). Dr. Schweig is also interested in the interplay between combinatorics and other branches of math, such as commutative algebra, in which sets of polynomials and associated geometric objects are studied.

He has also taught many undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as several non-standard honors courses covering topics such as mathematical music theory, set theory, and combinatorial topics. In addition, he runs the Stillwater High School Math Seminar, in which OSU faculty give talks at the Stillwater High School Math Club, covering topics these students would not normally see.

Currently, Dr. Schweig is Head of the OSU Mathematics Department.

Research Interests:

Dr. Schweig's research interests are in combinatorics and commutative algebra, with a specific focus on matroids, Borel ideals, toric ideals, and partially ordered sets. Much of his work deals with simplicial complexes and Stanley-Reisner theory, especially when properties of a simplicial complex may give rise to bounds on associated algebraic invariants.
