Fernando Vicosa Bauermann

Fernando Vicosa Bauermann, DVM, MSc, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology. Originally from Brazil, he earned his DVM, MSC and PhD from the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil. Bauermann was a visiting scientist at the Ruminant Diseases and Immunology Unit at the USDA in Ames, Iowa, for five years working with the genetic and antigenic characterization of emerging pestiviruses in cattle, especially HoBi-like viruses (Pestivirus H). Bauermann later worked at the virology lab at the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory at South Dakota State University focusing on the diagnostic of swine viral diseases and research on survivability of viral pathogens in feed ingredients. Bauermann's current research interests include the pathogenesis of viruses involved in the bovine respiratory disease complex; virus-host interactions; immunity; characterization of new/emerging viral pathogens; and virus inactivation methods.
