BIO & RESEARCH INTERESTs

A professor in the department of agricultural education, communications and leadership, Dr. Cartmell joined the agricultural communications faculty at OSU in 2001. During his time as a faculty member with the Ferguson College of Agriculture, Dr. Cartmell's primary focus has been on visual communications. His specialization is photography. He teaches a fall course on photography as well as a summer photography course often referred to as "Photo Tour." He has taught more than 20 courses in agricultural communication and international agriculture.

Dr. Cartmell was instrumental in developing the master of science degree in agricultural communications at OSU. He has worked with many graduate students throughout the years, chairing or serving on more than 175 committees, and he was recognized as the 2022 Recipient of the Ferguson College of Agriculture's Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising and Mentoring.

Dr. Cartmell recently completed three years as assistant director of the Master of International Agriculture Program at OSU. He is currently 100% time in agricultural communications but continues to have a passion for international development. He has been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator of five internationally focused projects. Three of those projects were funded through the U.S. Department of State for a total amount of more than $1.4 million. Each DOS project partnered agricultural professionals from Oklahoma with "fellows" from Africa, creating mutually beneficial relationships, which have endured long past the completion of the formal programs. He has been a co-author on more than 75 peer-reviewed journal articles, abstracts, refereed research papers, and refereed poster presentations related to international development and/or agricultural communications. In addition to his teaching load on campus, he has led numerous study abroad courses in places such as Thailand, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Scotland, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Dr. Cartmell's teaching and research efforts have been recognized in many ways. His teaching and research efforts have previously been acknowledged with awards from the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, the Association for Communication Excellence, and the American Association for Agricultural Education. He has also received the Oklahoma State University Regent's Distinguished Teaching Award and the Award of Excellence in Teaching from the Ferguson College of Agriculture. In 2021 he was inducted as a Fellow with the American Association for Agricultural Education.
