This course will examine Italy's cultural patrimony and its role shaping the country's national identity and international reputation. Students will study the influence of Italy's artistic and architectural heritage on modern Italian society, global tourism, and international conservation policies. Among the topics explored will be Pompei and the western imagination, the Monuments Men during World War II, mass tourism in the city of Venice, and the competing interests of international, national, and local communities.

The study of the religious experience of both lay people and clergy between 1300 and 1700, when their religious worldview underwent fundamental challenges and changes. The effort to understand the relationship between the secular world and the supernatural will be explored through devotional ideas, practices and religious rituals.
