TEACHING SUMMARY

Brittany has taught widely on themes of human-environment relationships, migration, global and local responsibility, research methodology, museums, and courses that introduce students to the world through various scales of geographic focus. She has taught all levels of university coursework, in multiple formats (large lecture, small seminar, one-on-one supervision, discussion labs). At OSU, she has taught Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change, Introduction to Cultural Geography, Mixed Methods in Field Research, and Field Techniques and Geodata Collection. At other institutions she has taught Geographies of Responsibility & Repair, Climate Migration, Global Movements: Migrations, Refugees, and Diasporas, World Regional Geography, Human Geography, Global Geography, and Africa.

    Millions of people in the world experience forced displacement from their homes due to intersecting factors like armed conflict, natural disasters, and persecution due to race, religion, nationality — among other threats to their safety and well-being. in this interdisciplinary and cross-regional course, students examine the intersecting legal, political, social, economic, and cultural dimensions of forced migration from the second half of the 20th century to today. Particular attention Is paid to the experiences of refugees, as well as to legal and policy approaches, humanitarian responses, and media and cultural representations.

    This course will expose students to a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques useful in successfully designing and completing field research. Special focus will include research and survey design, interviewing, ethnography, and visual techniques such as the use of imagery, photography, sketch mapping, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for the collection and analysis of geospatial data.
