TEACHING SUMMARY
My teaching approach is simple: I want students to learn principles deeply enough that they can use them in new situations.
Internalizing principles. I first ask students to work through complex organizational problems without giving them a framework. Through questions and discussion, I help them see where intuition falls short. I then introduce a framework and ask them to return to the original problem. This helps them understand both the framework and why it is useful.
Applying principles. I then give students new, ambiguous problems for their assignments. These problems are different from the cases we discuss in class, but students can solve them using what they have learned. I ask them to diagnose the situation, choose the right framework, and explain their reasoning. I want students to show that they can use an idea, not just remember it.
In 2024, I received the Ossian R. MacKenzie Teaching Award, given each year to one doctoral student across all departments in the Smeal College of Business for teaching performance. At Penn State, I taught Entrepreneurial Mindset. At Oklahoma State, I teach Organizational Behavior.
